Young love interview
Interview: SpunOut.ie talk to Mary, who recently got engaged, about commitment at an early age.
SpunOutter, Mary (not her real name) has just graduated from college. She’s made a decision beyond her years and recently got engaged to be married. She speaks to SpunOut.ie about why she’s getting engaged, her plans for the future and how commitment affects her life.
Clare: Hi Mary! Thanks for agreeing to talk to me. Can you tell me a bit about how you got engaged?
Mary: I got engaged on the 7th of September 2008. We went away to Connemara for a few days break. We went to the Connemara National Park and went for a walk up a hill. At the top of the hill, he knelt down on one knee and asked me to marry him. It was one of the best days of my life. I’m planning to get married in November 2010.
What do your friends and family think? Are any of your mates considering marriage?
My family think I’m too young. Age is just a number. If you love someone so much, that is all that matters. Some friends were shocked at first but then they got used to the idea. None of my friends are thinking about marriage though.
What has influenced you to get married?
Family, religion and beliefs have influenced me in getting married.
How did you decide that you were ready for a long term commitment?
After two years of going out together, I knew he was the one for me. I’ve known him for two years and eight months. We love each other so much and can’t bear to be apart.
What do you find hard about making a big commitment at a young age?
I don’t find anything hard about making a big commitment at a young age. I love my fiancé and he's been there through everything and I wouldn’t want to be without him.
What are your wedding plans?
We are going to get married next year. November 6th 2010. I don’t have any idea about the dress yet. I haven’t been looking.
Are you nervous about getting married?
I’m not nervous about getting married. I can't wait to be married to the love of my life, my rock. I can’t wait to move in together and start a family.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
I see myself happily married with a child and a good job. I’ll be happy with the love of my life.
Do you live with your fiancé?
No. Not yet but hopefully we will live together when he gets a job nearer to me.
Would you like to have a family young?
I’d leave it a couple of years before having a family.
What career would you like?
I would like to be a website designer.
What are you most looking forward to about married life?
Living together and seeing each other every day.
Do you believe in divorce?
No, I don’t believe in divorce.
Would you recommend it to other young people?
Yes, I would recommend it to other young people. If you love someone and want to spend the rest of your life with him or her, then you should honour it and get married.
