Stay awake in class
Youth tips on how to beat the 3pm slump at school!
Article by : SpunOut.ie
Let’s face it, in school you’ll always have a day during the year when you’re just wrecked! And you'll find yourself in a class with your eyes getting very heavy…
Here are my top tips to help you to stay awake in class:
- Extra sleep: The first, and most obvious way to keep awake during class, is to get an extra hour of sleep. Even a nap during the day can help. There is info here on getting a good night’s sleep.
- Eat healthy: The second is having a healthy snack; healthy snacks might not give you an instant energy boost, but they can give you a continuous release of energy throughout the day. Try eating fruit like sliced apples or grapes with some cheese or nuts instead of having a bar. Junk food, obviously, is not a good option, and can in some cases increases tiredness. Check out snack tips here.
- Keep hydrated: Dehydration can really bring on tiredness, so there’s nothing more refreshing than a nice bottle of water - try bringing one to class with you. We all need at least eight glasses (two litres) of water or fluids every day. This can be water or other drinks like herbal teas and so on. Avoid drinking too many sugary drinks such as coke, lemonade, sugary juices or coffee/tea with lots of added sugar.
- Keep focused on something: Keeping your brain active and focused on something can prevent you falling asleep. Try counting the amount of words/ numbers on the board or jotting down notes.
- Pinch yourself: Pinching yourself can snap you back into reality, but it only briefly wakes you up, so it’s not as effective as eating healthy or getting extra sleep.
These tips may not work for everyone, but there’s no harm in trying them. It’s better than falling asleep in class!
