Creativity starts as soon as you stop thinking about it
Let your muse come home.
Picture the scene: It’s approximately twenty three minutes past nine on a Sunday evening. You have an English essay to hand in for first class tomorrow, yet you haven’t written a word. We’ve all been there.
So, you sit there, pen poised, waiting to spew liquid genius and… nothing happens. You don’t know what you’re going to write but you know it has to be good. It has to show your mastery of the English language. It has to be creative.
But, you’re just not in that creative mood, are you? Your muse has left you, gone on a package holiday to Lanzarote. The wagon! You could sit there, try to make a stab at it but you’ll invariably end up doodling. Or you could do nothing. “Nothing!” I hear you cry. Why, yes. Step away from the refill pad and go do something else. Look, there’s a Jersey Shore marathon on - go watch that. There’s some dust bunnies underneath your bed that need tending to also.
The thing with creativity is that it comes at the most random of times, like on the toilet. I know I get some of my best ideas between the bog roll and toothpaste. It’s just a fact of life that we are at our creative best on the fly. Creativity cannot be forced. It’s a spur of the moment kind of thing, if it ever comes at all.
All of the best creators know that the cure for writers/artists/inventors block is to take a step back and take a breather. It helps you get a new perspective on things, whether that’s painting a picture or solving a problem.
Here are six simple steps to being creative:
- Raid the fridge. Eat whatever you can find.
- Turn on the computer. Google pictures of Robert Pattinson and look at funny videos of drunken kittens playing the tuba.
- Lie on the grass and look at cloud shapes.
- Decide to tidy your room and then abandon the idea halfway through.
- Stand in the middle of a room and wonder what you’re doing there.
- Now you are ready to be creative!
Like most things in life, from finding love to losing weight, creativity happens as soon as you stop thinking about it. So, climb a tree or make a sandwich and leave that project til your muse comes home.
