Christmas thoughts

Opinion: A time of joy or greed?

Christmas is a very religious time of year.

Sadly, Christmas is also the time of year that we see capitalism coming to the forefront, more than at any other time of year. Companies are advertising gifts and “presents” we don’t need and are making millions in the process. People are buying into this when they buy others stuff that they don’t need. The advertising clearly works well. But hopefully not everyone buys into this. Do they?

Even the Church gets in on this, with their dues. I mean come on, give me a break. Since when do people have to pay for their beliefs? It’s ridiculous. Another thing is, whoever doesn’t buy into this is shunned as an outcast. A great quote from the movie 12 Monkeys fits in well here; “There’s the television. It’s all right there-all right there. Look, listen, kneel, pray. Commercials! We’re not productive anymore. We don’t make things anymore. It’s all automated. What are we for then? We are consumers. If you buy a lot of stuff, you are a good citizen. But if you don’t buy a lot of stuff, if you don’t, what are you then? I ask you? What? Mentally ill”?

To be honest, I completely agree with this quote. People are forgetting the true values of life.

As I said before, I’m not religious, but I am spiritual, and am a family guy. It is times like Christmas that we should put our family and friends to the forefront, not by buying them gifts, but by just being there with them, telling stories, sharing memories, having the craic and a good laugh. But the world being what it is, people get sucked into advertisements by companies who are capitalising on the Santa fairytale.

I strongly believe that the floods and big freeze that happened around Christmas time last year was a universal sign that what we are doing is wrong. Look at it this way, Christmas is the biggest date on the capitalist calendar and all the shops are flooded and destroyed. What more of a sign do we need??

I believe that that was the start of the change of thought, and consciousness that The Celestine Prophecy talks about. 2012 won’t be the end of the world like people are predicting, but I believe that it will be the end of an old way of thinking and the beginning of, not a new way, but the beginning of a change.

There’s no doubt that people are already aware of what needs to be done, but 2012 will be the time where everyone opens their eyes and sees that a change is needed. I always try and finish with a quote, but today I have nothing. Just think about the way you are living and thinking. Will you be left behind when 2012 arrives, or will you have changed?
