History of Bond

The good, the bad and the slightly less handsome...

Article by : SpunOut.ie - Rating :

Sean Connery

Oh yesh, the man who epitomises Bond. He first appeared in Dr. No in 1962, which was iconic not only for Connery's sterling performance but for Ursula Andress' bikini… Sean Connery appeared in six movies, including some of the most memorable Bond titles ever: Goldfinger, From Russia with love and Diamonds are forever. Connery's Bond also had to deal with one of the most recognisable movie villains ever: Ernst Blofeld. Connery set the mould for everything a good Bond should be: charming, suave, witty and a real Pussy Galore magnet…

George Lazenby

George only did one Bond film and just as bloody well. Although On Her Majesty's secret service was a good film with a great cast, Lazenby just didn't quite look the part and quit as 007 before the premiere because he was convinced his appearance as Bond would bring him better roles. Lazenby, whose only prior acting experience was in commercials, wasn't exactly right in his assumption and has been largely confined to Japanese T.V.

Roger Moore

Sean Connery may have been the best Bond, but Roger Moore is my personal favourite. The most prolific Bond of all, he made seven films between 1973 and 1985. He got a lot of stick for his “Left eyebrow raised, right eyebrow raised” style of acting, but he brought a real element of fun to the role with his terrible puns and piss-take attitude. Some of his most entertaining films include Moonraker, Live and let die and Octopussy. He also had a fantastic partnership with the 7 foot Jaws. He retired in 1985 at the grand old age of 58.

Timothy Dalton

Timothy Dalton was the polar opposite from Roger Moore in the way he portrayed Bond. A talented Shakespearean actor, he played Bond very straight, in fact a little too straight when the audiences were used to the tongue in cheek humour of Connery and Moore. Although some critics say he was the closest to Ian Fleming's original idea for Bond. He only stayed on for two films, The living daylights and License to kill.

Pierce Brosnan

After a break of six years, 007 returned in 1995 with Goldeneye and a new Bond in Navan man Pierce Brosnan, and he didn't disappoint. In his 10 years he turned out four stellar movies and has become synonymous with the role, indeed he is the only Bond with which a lot of people from our generation are familiar. He decided to pack it in this year in an attempt to spread his wings a little. Daniel Craig certainly has big shoes to fill…
