Behind the scenes

Interview: The experience of volunteering at a film festival.

Article by : SpunOut.ie

Aisling Friel is a volunteer at the Guth Gafa documentary film festival in Gortahork, Co. Donegal. She is currently studying a BA in Film and Television and hopes to work in TV when she is finished.

How did you get involved with Guth Gafa?

I have an interest in film and when I saw that the Guth Gafa festival team were looking for volunteers it was a great opportunity to see some interesting docs, meet some new people and have some fun!

What kind of things do you do during the festival?

Jobs change all the time throughout the festival. I lend a hand wherever I'm needed really, selling tickets in the box office, collecting tickets, keeping an eye on venues, all sorts.

Have you always had an interest in film?

Yeah, I have, I enjoy all sorts of films and what really interests me is what happens behind the scenes.

Who is your favourite film director?

It's a tough one and something I change my mind about all the time, flavour of the month would have to be Danny Boyle.

What is your favourite film?

I like lots of very different films but I have a real soft spot for animation so I would have to say my favourite film is 'Toy Story'.

Who is your favourite actor/ actress?

Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie have given some very powerful performances and are both very talented.

What does your film course involve?

I am studying for a B.A. in Film & Television in G.M.I.T. My course covers a broad range of topics, from the theoretical to the technical to the organisational to the creative aspects of the film and television industry. Everything you could want really.

What would you like to do when you finish it- would you like to stay involved in film?

I'll probably work in film or television when I'm finished but I haven't found my niche just yet. I'm going to do some travelling first though.

What advice would you give to another young person who is interested in film, and would like to pursue it further?

Look out for opportunities to gain experience because they are out there. People are usually very willing to help you out if you ask them. Be as enthusiastic and positive as you can!
