What happened to the M in MTV?!

Article by : SpunOut.ie

Picture it. You’re just in from school, pretty tired from your days slog. Didn’t do so good on the ol’ maths test, and you managed to score yourself a lunchtime detention. All you want to do is flop on the couch, and in the words of The Fresh Prince, “max and relax,” with a few of your favourite music videos on the box.

Alas, you flick to MTV ONE and are met with the ‘drama’ of Newport Harbour, The Hills and America’s Most Smartest Model (they’ve even abandoned grammar on MTV!) Not the rhythms you were hoping for, you are forced to listen to the shrieks and shrills of orange teens who just can’t seem to use the English language! “Like, oh my GOD,” they ‘totally’ need a dictionary! I’ve had enough of this at school, I don’t need it in the evenings for ‘entertainment!’

When MTV was launched on August 1st 1981, its purpose was to ‘show music videos,’ I don’t know about you, but I haven’t seen an actual music video on MTV for….nope I don’t even know how long ago it’s been! With a name like Music Television, you’d wonder why the heavy hand of the law hasn’t been on their backs about false advertising!

Justin Timberlake said it all when he called for MTV to “play more videos” in his acceptance speech at the MTV Video Music Awards in 2007. If the stars can see it why can’t the producers! Ironically, it was Audrina and Lauren from The Hills who presented his award, I’m sure they slunk backstage in embarrassment! If I received a dis’ from JT, I’m sure I’d do the same!

So that’s my take on things! True, sometimes a little reality TV is nice. It’s an escape from your own world, where, for a half an hour all you have to worry about is whether Lauren and Heidi will ever make up, or Audrina and Jason will ever get together. From a music lovers prospective though, let’s have a little more drums and a little less ‘drama!’

I want my MTV!!!
