Young people on The Lisbon Treaty

Listen to both sides.

Article by : SpunOut.ie

The cut and thrust of political debate ought to be informative, engaging and animating. The Lisbon Treaty debate has been absolutely none of these things. At present, in fact, the arguments for and against best resembles a water fight with bleach mixed in: It ought to be fun, but instead it’s just plain dangerous.

With the debate being vague or unhelpful at best, and spurious or sinister at worst, it can be a little difficult to decipher what’s real, what’s false, and indeed what’s really false. And that’s where SpunOut comes in.

With a little help from our good friends at EuroCreator.com, in an attempt to bring some youthful sanity into the mix we decided to head back to our birthplace, Ballyshannon, to get the thoughts of a fifth year class at Cholaiste Colmcille. And in case you’re wondering why we’re asking people for the opinions of a Treaty on which they can’t vote, here’s why:

SpunOut has always given young people a platform to air their views regardless of age or circumstance, and we know better than most that a young person’s political opinions don’t come in the post along with their first voting card, and the issues at hand will affect young people whether they can vote or not. In a way, it makes them the ultimate impartial judges.

So, with the help of three pairs of students having their say on three central themes with a closing case from each side, all delivered in a leaders address of old stylee, we aim to give you a typically SpunOut view of the Lisbon Treaty:  factual, straight-forward and absolutely crap-free.
