Wake up to the need for change

Opinion: Will we wake up and stop poverty, war and climate change?

Article by : SpunOut.ie - Rating :

There seems to be a feeling that this Depression will soon pass, and we will all go back to our affluent, low-tax lifestyle. Recently, I've come to realise that I don’t think this is true. In my opinion, we are seeing the end of civilisation at this time. If people are around long enough for my generation's grandchildren to be alive, they will surely resent us, and the two generations before us. In general, we caused global warming, and everything that is wrong with the world.

Communism has failed us. Socialism has failed us. And now, Capitalism has failed us. We have no political system left, which may lead to anarchy in the future. The next Depression won't be too far away. It may be in 30 or 40 years, but it will last longer. I think that Depressions will get longer, and more frequent. All the while, the rich will stay rich, and the middle and lower classes will get poorer. Climate change will be hammering nails into our coffin with increasing regularity. That's not to mention oil supplies, which will be gone soon.

Will we be around to see it? Climate change IS coming, and it will affect our planet before we're gone. Temperatures, along with sea-levels and temperature-related deaths will rise, and the number of humans, which has been increasing at an idiotic rate, will be slashed.

Along with this, the underlying threat of nuclear action, by North Korea, Russia, America, Israel, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan... anyone, will always be present. Within 30 years, I think someone will have started a third, nuclear World War, which will probably finish us all off.

For now, it's like we're all just lying around, waiting for something to happen. Whether it's Northern Ireland, the Taliban, Al Qaeda, Gaza, Georgia, Pakistan; or a natural disaster in the First World, something is coming that is going to mess us up.

That may provide the wake-up call we need, or, as is likely, it will plunge us into a state of madness. Climate change, nuclear war and Depressions will spell the end for the human race as we know it. We may need to revert to a much more basic society, not quite caveman, yet something that would require regression of centuries.

Given that in Ireland, and in England, the main political parties are shockingly similar – and will never allow anyone else to be elected – we will probably need a good spell of anarchy and civil unrest to get us back to a more basic, primitive level.

Call me cynical, or crazy, but I see a pattern that people are unwilling, and unable to break. Human beings cannot govern justly, and, I believe, should not be ruling the world. Maybe it would be good if all human life ended and let planet Earth carry on without killing itself.

Can we break this cycle? I believe we can only if religion is destroyed, wilfully; all governments are elected democratically; there are no wars; we all commit to stopping climate change; nuclear weapons are destroyed; human nature is changed and people learn to govern justly; the Third World is eradicated of poverty; population is controlled;  banks are shut down and we have Credit Unions. Then, and only then, can we prevent the destruction of society as we know it, and possibly the human race, in the next 200 years.

Wow, this is bleak. How could anyone say that it would be "be good if all human life ended and let planet Earth carry on without killing itself.? I mean, for who would it be better for exactly? The lichen and the antelope? Humanity has done enormous good as well damage to the planet. We are the only species that has managed to elevate itself beyond its natural state to such a degree, and I make no apologies about that. What about art, music and antibiotics? Why should religion be destroyed? People will always fight about something, you can't just single out religon and blame it for everything. And, yes, it would be great if there were no wars etc. but that is just not realistic. If you want all governments to be democratically elected as you say, how would you ensure this? How can you stand up against tyranny without a military force? Despite what pacificists say, we need armies so that freedoms like democracy can be maintained.
