Let the sun shine in again

Opinion: It is up to us to lift this country out of financial gloom.

Article by : SpunOut.ie

As our nation, along with all of our worldly neighbours, digresses into economic difficulty, it is time to take a stand. It is time to rise as a nation and to remember it is up to us to lift this country out of the trenches of economic and financial gloom and back onto the battlefield that is the world trading market.

The large corporate banks and big time property investors have left us, the people, in a position of hardship. They let their own ambition and lust for greater advances in personal fortune get the better of them and it is now the ordinary decent 40 (or more) hour a week worker who has to pay the consequences. It is the farmers, the nurses, the teachers, and many other hardworking heroes of our everyday lives who are left picking up the broken shards of glass that is our economy.

We, the working public, have also been left with a great dilemma on our hands. At times of such controversy and adversity, we often look to our government for help and advice. Unfortunately for the people of Ireland, I believe we have been cursed with an entire cabinet of incompetent fools. And no, I am no Fine Gael supporter. I believe there is no party or possible coalition that could be formed that can steer this nation out of this time of grievance.

We must find a leader who is strong enough to take the reins and guide the fearful horses of Ireland back onto the track and straight for the finish line. Brian Cowen is not the answer to what we need. We cannot have a leader who believes in attacking the finances of students and senior members of our community to solve the government’s problems. We cannot have a leader who still refuses to start fixing the problem from within his own party by cutting government salaries.

However, not all problems can be answered by pay cuts. We all know that during this time pay cuts would have a serious implications on working families. The answer is an increase in efficiency. If we all make small sacrifices, such as arriving ten minutes earlier for work and leaving ten minutes later, I believe it would mean a dramatic increase in worker efficiency for the same pay. This small act of selflessness could be incredibly beneficial in the long run if executed with national unity.

This is especially true in the public sector. The government has to ensure that its spending is being used wisely and correctly. However, the instalment of another committee or council is not the answer. Junior ministers and other Dáil members should be called upon to see that public sector changes are completed successfully.

With all that said, I must say we are in somewhat of a lucky situation. It could always be worse, Enda Kenny could indeed be in power. We need to look for the positives. We must constantly remind ourselves that this current slump in the world economic market is temporary and that better days are on the horizon.

We have worked through harder times and have seen worse days. I believe that it will be the good, honest and decent workers of Ireland, in all sectors, that will guide this country back to its former glory. So let us all rebuild that broken window of our economy and let the sun shine in again.
