White lies
Review: Mick Flannery's latest album.
Well, here’s one I’ll certainly be falling asleep to when nightmares of the Leaving Cert are keeping me awake! Flannery is a little known Irish singer/songwriter of incredible talent, whose first major label album, White Lies, is set to be an enormous success. The album is predominantly made up of hauntingly beautiful ballads such as “Do Me Right” and “Smiling Girl”, where Flannery showcases his talents both for tender piano pieces and passionate guitar.
His mellow style is mesmerising, his voice beautifully textured and raw. For a man of only twenty-four, one would think he had lived a hundred lifetimes. His sound calls to mind the likes of Damien Rice and a young Tom Waits, but Flannery manages to remain fresh and exciting in every track. In fact, though his slower tracks seem to leave their mark in my mind, Flannery is not just another ballad-junkie. Look out for his more up-tempo numbers, such as “Tomorrow’s Paper” and “What Do You See?”, which will show you another side to Flannery’s raw musical ability.
Overall, this album is definitely one for the old iPod. If you appreciate chilling music with memorable lyrics or are just in the mood for an hour or so to mellow out, stick White Lies into the stereo and let Mick Flannery take you into a completely different world.
Overall Rating – 8/10
