What will the new decade bring?

Get creative, get unique and get ready for the music of the 2010s.

The coming of the 1950s brought a new revolution of sound to the ears of the world’s youth. Elvis Presley and the rock’ n’ roll movement created a sense of freedom and rebellion especially in the suburban areas of the United States.

The 1960s brought a wave of peace and love across the world with artists like Jimi Hendrix and The Doors. At the coming of the 1970s, band like Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath took rock’ n’ roll to another level with the creation of heavy metal.

Ever since then music scenes have been created just like the Bay Area thrash scene in San Francisco and the Punk movement in England in the 1980s. Each of these decades has been shaped largely by the music scene that was developed alongside them.

Since 2000, there have been a number of ‘fads’ that started but failed to grasp the decade and put their stamp on it. Gangsta rap, Indie, Electronica, Emo, Pop-punk and many others have been prominent genres throughout the “naughties“, but none will go down in history as being the definitive sound that shaped our generation.

The Kaiser Chiefs or Kings of Leon will never be compared with Led Zeppelin or Deep Purple as musical revolutionists and Ronan Keating will never be associated with this decade like Jimi Hendrix or Bob Dylan were linked with the 1960s. This has left us puzzling over the question: What will the 2010s bring?

Who could have predicted the rebirth of Indie, which has dominated the Pop scene in the last few years of this decade? With the way music has developed throughout the years, there is next to no way of predicting what will dominate your radios and the shelves of your local record shop. The diversity of today’s youth makes it close to impossible for one genre to take over a decade and brings forth another question: Will any future decade be forever associated with a particular genre of music again?

Personally, I believe that people are getting more and more creative and thanks to their yearning for a sound unique to them, they will cause another music revolution in the years to come. Local bands such as Wyvern Lingo and Little Green Cars have taken existing sounds and blended them superbly with influences from other genres to fabricate their own style that I believe will be the next big thing in the years to come.

Some criticise music genres such as Indie, Electronica and Emo for being too one-dimensional and not having the ability to allure an overall majority. There is a sound out there for everyone and a lot of people have searched and scoured for the one that suits them. The sound that matches their emotional status and harmonises perfectly with their personalities. I believe the new genre that will takeover will have something that appeals to all.

So, what will the 2010s bring? Whether it be a progressive take on existing music or an inventive fusion of existing genres such as Jazz Punk or Dance Metal, there is one important thing to remember: it is up to this generation to make sure that they are not forgotten.

It is up to us to pick up our guitars, begin playing our pianos and scratching our decks, so as to create the new wave of music that will embody us in music history forever.

What will the next decade bring? Whatever you want it to.
