What the folk?
Dave Jeanes get's cosy on Swan Songs.
Dave Jeanes has always charmed me with his intriguing takes at everyday ideas. Dominating the music with a lot of guitar-and-vocals-only songs, Swan Songs is lovely for cosy home days, but I wouldn't suggest it while entertaining friends.
He loves to play with your mind with songs like "Cheers Mate" by contrasting happy lyrics while playing in the minor key or vice-versa in the case of songs like "Moodswings," which invites you to sing with him in the upbeat "R-A-C-H-E-L" chorus.
The fuzzy lo-fi recording style makes you feel like you're in a room full of tapes and radios and, well, lots of guitars. There are some breaks in the pattern, like "Anyway" and "Don't Try This at Home."
Occasionally, his verses seem a bit unmelodious and have near spoken-like quality. The choruses are always a danceable relief. My absolute favourite has to be "The How-To-Get-To-Know-You Blues," with its charming radio-esque sound and the kind of lyrics that you'll find yourself humming over coffee the next morning.
