Top 10 albums of the decade
Get the knives out, the "End of Decade" lists begin!
I just feel the need to add this legal disclaimer before my list begins, because these lists always provoke anger: This is not definitively the Top Ten Best Albums from 2000-2009. It’s my favourites. And, before you ask, I don’t like Muse, Radiohead, The Artic Monkeys, Coldplay or U2.
1. XTRMNTR (2000) – Primal Scream. A deafening, visceral, angry record. Heavy, industrial and dark, it kicked off the decade in style. The Scream at their very best, there’s house, dub and frenzied rock here. Key track: 'Acclerator'
2. 22 Dreams (2008) – Paul Weller. Stunningly varied, always interesting, Weller left no-one in doubt of his ability, in the year he turned fifty, he’s at his best since Wild Wood. For the first time since 1997, Weller is cool, and we can all like him. Key track: 'Echoes Round the Sun'
3. Elephant (2003) – The White Stripes. A fantastic journey through Rock’s fifty year history, ranging from folk to heavy scuzz and old-time rockers. Jack White’s best album of a stunning decade. Key track: 'Seven Nation Army'
4. Magic (2007) – Bruce Springtseen. The Boss’ finest record since the 80’s sees him reinvent the art of roots rock that made him a great in the first place. Highly political, and with a whiff of a mid-life crisis. Key track: 'Radio Nowhere'
5. Riot City Blues (2006) – Primal Scream. Some call it a guilty pleasure, it’s a stunning rock ‘n’ roll album, that’s silly, psychedellic, funny and the most fun I’ve had with an album. Key track: 'Dolls' (Sweet Rock ‘n’ Roll)
6. Without George (2008) – Without George. Little-known Cong band’s roots rock album was a big hit with me, if not many others. Funky, bluesy, clever and funny, sometimes all at once. Key track: 'Some People'
7. West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum (2009) – Kasabian. A mad, claustrophobic album, it explores the human mind without knowing how. Much-varied sound, it’s more coherent than any other Kasabian efforts. Sounds great live. Key track: 'Underdog'
8. We’ll Live And Die In These Towns (2007) – The Enemy. The finest debut in years. Angry, insightful, and sounds brilliant. Owes much to Punk Rock and Oasis, the most socially aware album in years. Key track: 'We’ll Live And Die In These Towns'
9. Tonight (2009) – Franz Ferdinand. A dirty, sexy, disco pop classic from the finest art-rockers around. Big departure from their previous sound, this beats their Mercury Prize-winning debut. Lack of guitar sound is, for once, welcome. Key track: 'Ulysses'
10. Costello Music (2006) – The Fratellis. Another silly, dirty album, this was fantastic fun, with funny lyrics and tales of “loveable stoners”, hippies and strippers. Like Supergrass for the Noughties. Key track: 'Chelsea Dagger'
