Top 10 Christmas songs

Fa la la la la la la la la

Article by : SpunOut.ie

Why exactly do people feel the urge to write Christmas songs? Maybe because if it’s in anyway catchy, you can live off the royalties for years. A lot of the time, however, they can make a band a bit of a mockery (does anyone out there know another Wizzard song?). That said, we all love them because they’re so cheesy!

My picks of the best out there:

Slade – So Here It Is Merry Christmas: Pure Glam Rock bliss, with classic lines “What will you’re daddy do when he sees your mother kissing Santa Claus?” Noddy Slater screaming “It’s Chriiiiistmaaaaas”  towards the end wins it for me.

Dustin the Turkey (with Dervla Kirwan)– Fairy Tale Of New York: Too depressing to make number one, Dustin’s effort gets the nod, mainly due to the fact that he has better teeth than Shane McGowan.

John Lennon– Merry Christmas (War Is Over)
: Again, a little on the sad side, but it’s celebratory, and is actaully a decent song!

Wizzard– I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday
: A return to Glam Rock, Wizzard only miss the top three because of Roy Wood’s scarily gruff voice as he calls the choir of children into the song during the outro.

Shakin’ Stevens– Merry Christmas Everyone: Cheesy lyrics, only the video is cheesier. The only reason anyone under 30 has ever heard of Shakey is this song, and Tommy Tiernan.

Bruce Springsteen– Santa Claus Is Comin’ To Town
: Admittedly, almost everyone has done a version of this song, but Springsteen’s sticks out because of some “ho-ho-hoing” midway through the track.

Johnny Marks – Rudolph The Rednose Reindeer
: Come on, everyone knows the words to this more traditional tale.

Band Aid: Feed The World (Do They Know It’s Christmas?): Features the likes of Paul Weller, Freddie Mercury, Sting, David Bowie, Paul McCartney, and, of course, Bono and Bob Geldof, this is an absolute classic. Newer version here.

Frederic Austin – The Twelve Days Of Christmas: “Does anyone know all the days? I only know the “Partridge in a pear tree.”

Paul McCartney – Wonderful Christmas Time: Absolute cheesey domesticity, the contrast between this and Lennon’s number shows exactly the different directions the two went after The Beatles split up.
