Study to the beat

Opinion: Get through the ordeal of exams with the help of music.

Article by : SpunOut.ie

Ireland is hit by tropical sunshine and a heat wave for just a few weeks of every year, and it always seems to be during school and college exams. I’m sure if it were possible to get your hands on God’s calendar around now, you would see a chunk of dates marked exams and holidays. This coincides with when he takes his own annual holidays, packs up his summer clothes and sunscreen and heads to the beach.

Exams are punishment for everything bad that you have ever done in life, and an added penance is the good weather. Exams are created to make us both hate and appreciate life. Following exams, you look at life in a different light and are thankful for your newly gained freedom. But this appreciative outlook usually fades quickly and that is why we are made to do it all over again the following year.

To get you through the exam ordeal it is good to motivate yourself with music. Listening to your favourite tunes is a perfect way to relax and unwind after a tough exam, and is great as a way to motivate you for the next exam. Try to listen to songs that you associate with good memories, as bad memories will only put you in a negative mindset.

If you are feeling tired and disheartened after a long day of exams and cannot face studying for the next day, then go outside for some fresh air with your mp3 player and listen to a fast upbeat tempo song, which will help  energise you. (Think of the affect fast music has when you are on the dance floor!)

But remember, the music that you listen to around this time may forever be associated with the stress of exams (this can be a perfectly good way to ruin your favourite song). For me, Jack Johnson will be forever associated with summer exams and I can never listen to his music in the same way again.
