Ode to LYT

Reeling in the years.

Over the last week or so, I have been involved in stage crew for a local youth theatre. I used to be an active member of this theatre, until I came to the age when I was no longer considered a youth. Blast!!

I was a member of Loughrea Youth Theatre for many years and I loved every moment of it. It boosted my confidence immensely and introduced me to some of the nicest people I have ever met, some of whom I now consider to be my nearest and dearest friends. Throughout my years there I took part in many fantastic productions, such as Oliver, Mary Poppins, Les Miserables and High School Musical. Not to mention the winter concerts.

Of course, you never know what you have and how much you appreciate it until it is gone. When I was forced to leave at 18, I decided that they were not going to get rid of me that easy. So, I decided to come back as stage crew. That way I could still be a part of the little LYT family that had formed down through the years. Returning back to the people that I have practically grown up with is enjoyable, but also quite daunting, as every time I see them they are that bit older and that bit more confident in themselves.

I remember these people as teeny tiny little kids and now they are teenagers. I know it may sound a bit silly, seeing as I am only 18 myself, but it genuinely makes me feel as old as stone. There is one kid in particular that I held in my arms the day he came home from hospital, and now I watch on from the wings as he jumps about singing and dancing thirteen years on. If that does not make you feel old, nothing will!

Never the less, I look forward to going ‘home’ and seeing all my LYTer’s for every production.

I was blown away this past weekend by how much talent these kids have that I just had to share this. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

I am already excited about the next production in the summer. Hot Mikado, in case you were wondering.
