Muse: Absolution

Review: A modern classic of an album.

Article by : SpunOut.ie

Muse started out in Devon, England in 1994. The trio is comprised of Matthew Bellamy (vocals, guitar and piano), Christopher Wolstenholme (bass, and keyboard) and Dominic Howard (drums).  They have been classified as progressive rock or alternative.

What sets them apart from the rest of the very varied alternative grouping is their combinations of classical sounds with electric rock. It could be argued that this has been done before, but I believe Muse totally make it their own - they are on a planet of their own when it comes to modern rock. Absolution is their third album to be released so far and probably was the album which secured their name of excellence. It has been said that Muse are the best live band in the world. Having investigated this statement during the summer, I have to agree Muse are incredible live, but what about their recorded music?

I have to acknowledge this album had to grow on me over a space of months, mainly due to my own preoccupation with other bands and music. But I am so happy I finally gave Muse the chance they deserve because this is one of my all time favourite records now. Absolution is like a fine work of art, you have to stand back from it to appreciate all the complex details and genius workmanship which have gone into it’s crafting. Once you have fully grasped its wonder and beauty - you will never listen to it in the same way again. So don’t just skip through it.

The first time I listened to Muse’s Absolution, the only track which stood out to me, and made me think, “Ok, yeah this is a band worth remembering”, was “Hysteria”. If one song could be chosen to represent Muse, “Hysteria” would be that song. It is musically intricate, lyrically poetic and rhythmically exhilarating.

Fantastically, “Hysteria” is just one of many stunning tracks on this 14 track album. Some highlights would be “The Small Print”, “Butterflies and Hurricanes”, “Time Is Running Out” and “Falling Away with You”. Muse have created a good contrast of up-tempo songs and slower, more thoughtful tunes as well. I found the structure of Absolution emphasised this balance, and gives the listener time to take it all in.

This is a truly captivating alternative album, a clear ten out of ten. There are no downfalls or negative qualities to this album. And the good news keeps coming - all of Muse’s work is maintained to the same perfect standard. So if you are in the market for some progressive rock temptation, and if you don’t have Muse on your MP3 player, what are you waiting for?!

Verdict: A modern classic. 10/10
