Mojo GoGo - The Rounce EP
Mojo GoGo are certainly ones to watch.
Mojo GoGo are a band in the depths of infancy. Formed only four months ago, they are proverbial newborns who have learned to walk, talk and write some damn catchy tunes in the shortest of time periods. Fresh from their victory at the ‘T Play Off Battle of the Bands’ in Derry, the band is set to release The Rounce in March.
Catchy guitar lines and vocal melodies are present in copious quantities to create a superb opener on this album. The opening track, “This Isn't Love” is a tale of unrequited love whose subject matter doesn't particularly match it's punchy, jumpy rhythm. But this doesn't matter. It's these clashing themes and sounds that make the track so appealing. Next up is “Prison Shoes”, a slightly darker track that shows off the band's individual talents, with a funky baseline and an entrancing, sweeping guitar line in the chorus. “Change” is a slower, heart-felt ode to a transient romance. The song is well-structured and has glimpses of greatness with its driving chorus. However it lacks 'mojo' in places.
Lastly, we come to “Straighten Me Out”, a poppy number with pretty much the same subject matter as “Change”. Catchy vocal hooks and witty lyrics here make this a very listenable and engaging track.
Overall, The Rounce is an excellent EP. Mojo GoGo are a hugely talented bunch of young raconteurs and a debut like this signals good things for their future. Hopefully, as the band grows they can hone their talents to produce more great nuggets like this in the future. I will wait with expectant ears.
