Mindless Self Indulgence - IF

Review: One of those albums you are either gonna hate or love.

Article by : SpunOut.ie

Released in April 2008, this is one of those albums you are either gonna hate or love. Mindless Self indulgence or MSI, are a New York native band. They are somewhere between electronic/ punk rock, however nothing about this band is main stream, which I think adds to the great appeal.

Absolutely nothing about them has been done before and the freshness of their sound is uplifting in today’s somewhat monotonous music scene.

The band consists of lead vocals Jimmy Urine, bassist Lyn-Z, and guitarist Steve righ? and drummer Kitty. Yes, that is correct a female drummer! Be excited people.

IF is Mindless Self Indulgences follow up album to their debut. Their previous venture with Anything to Rebel Against was a rather overly intense episode of blunt lyrics and loud instrumental lines which is better left as an experimental composition. Fortunately, it led to IF - totally worth the wait in this writer’s humble opinion!

I was pleasantly surprised when I first turned on my iPod and heard Never Wanted to Dance- the opening track on IF. It is energetic, catchy and the most subtle version of ‘I like you’ I ever heard! It is followed by the artistically crafted 21 tracks. With mind blowing tunes like On it and Revenge, you will not even consider 21 songs too much for one album.

I really enjoyed the exploratory combinations of electronic elements and the classic punk guitar, drums ensemble. Jimmy’s vocals are far from what would be considered melodic, but these guys are about more than pretty little love songs and easy listening. But here comes the warning and down side to being, perhaps, a little too out there.

In case you haven’t already guessed from their name, MSI make a lot of sexual references and they are not afraid to swear. Some of those out there with mild dispositions WILL be offended with the latest from the MSI. Tracks like Animal, Get It Up and Issues are strongly worded, sexually based songs. Which may be deemed to be too offensive and excessive, and dare I say, gratuitous.

I really did enjoy this album, most of the tracks are new, exciting and fun. I found it energising and interesting but this is not a good choice for the vast majority. This is due to what I personally believe to be a promiscuous album message delivered in an experimental - and therefore to the greater number of listeners - unappealing style.

At the end of the day it is up to every listener to decide for themselves what is suitable and what is a step too far is. For you music lovers out there who want a new sound, lively and frank musical experience- listen to this! It is a ten out of ten! For those who are more inclined to pop, light cheery melodies, give this one a miss.
