Look out for me
Artists and songs to look out for in the coming year.
2009 is well and truly underway but new artists are springing up all over the place, so look out for my top picks below. Some of the artists here are already popular, but are coming back under the radar.
Of course, everyone has their own opinion on the new people we should keep a close eye on, or ear as the case may be, so spread the word here.
Lykke Li
Lykke Li, a Swedish indie singer, is set for big things this year, after the release of her album, Youth Novels. Lykke Li has a mix of solid beats and interesting lyrics, with some songs to nod your head to and other to tap your toe to. A brilliant and unique voice who is supposedly a phenomenon when live. She has been nominated for a Meteor Award for ‘Best International Female’ but is up against; Beyonce, Pink, Duffy and Rihanna. Keep an eye on this one, she’ll make it big once she hits the mainstream.
Franz Ferdinand
Oh yes, they’re back! Remember them do ya? They were the cool kids with the back room tunes. Well Franz Ferdinand are back, and in my opinion, as good as ever! (Maybe it’s to do with the fact that their new single is firmly embedded in my head.) The brand spanking new album Tonight has some good tunes on it. Not all good, but when they’re good, they’re great! Be sure to find their singles being blasted out on the radio over the next few months, and some gigs, I’m almost certain!
Beirut
Just to start off, they’re actually not from Beirut. They use eastern music and folk and fuse it with western pop. Yes, okay I know, quite strange indeed, but give them a listen, and be inspired. They have a lot of good songs, such as "Nantes" and "The Mausoleum". Check ‘em out, have a gander, enjoy!
Blue Syndrome
An Irish band, featuring some great songs; Blue Syndrome, have exploded onto the Irish Music scene with an expected release of their new album in April. They were part of last year’s Blastbeat and as far as I know, got pretty far! Some great songs coming out include, "Kiss The Girl" and "Everything Eventually". Look out for them, and get in on the ground level.
Ladyhawke
This New Zealander has been launched onto the music scene, and her tunes are hot! Her unique music is something everyone can listen to. Ladyhawke has the music of tomorrow, and is one you should definitely find an interest in. Some brilliant songs from her self titled album include "My Delirium", "Dusk Till Dawn" and "Paris is Burning". The electro-funk music of Ladyhawke will, with no doubt, make you hit the replay button.
Some other new bands in the coming year include:
Temper Trap
Dan Black
Florence and the Machine
Little Boots
Master Shortie
Mumford and Sons
White Lies
Have a look at some of these, one of them is bound to appeal to you! So, 2009 looks to be another great year for music!
