Kila: Dolan's Warehouse
"If not for the music, for the sheer craic agus spraoi that comes with it."
As of Saturday December 20th, Kíla are my heroes. After being privileged to attend one of their gigs that night I solidly believe I’ll be hooked to their music for life. There was a jovial, merry atmosphere in Dolan’s Pub as a slightly older generation celebrated the Munster Match and waited to go inside to the Warehouse. Christmas tree lit outside and it was set to be a good night for all.

It wasn’t long before the crowd grew ever so slightly restless. Due to kick off between nine and half nine, we were left waiting until around half ten with no excuses and no apologies. However, as there was no support act, Kíla earned our forgiveness almost immediately when they appeared on stage. You can tell at a glance they’re all passionate about their music. Before the end of the first song beads of perspiration were falling from Rónán Ó Snodaigh’s (bodhrán) forehead as a result of his lively performance. You know when you’re watching them that they’re not just playing music; they’re putting on a show.
They quite literally took the throng of people’s breath away as the majority of enthusiasts danced, sang and clapped to their addictive and captivating rhythms. I didn’t budge from my place in front of the stage until I begrudgingly accepted the show had come to an end. The diversity of their instruments and individual abilities is truly astounding. Ranging from the bodhrán to the drums, from bass guitar to the electric fiddle; you’re never short of something new focus your attention on.

There is a haunting element to a lot of their music. They play with such skill and undeniable talent it’s difficult not to be taken in to the world of their contemporary traditional style. Fusing a mixture of trad, rock, punk and other indescribable elements; they’re more cutting edge than a sharpened stanley knife. The stunning melodies were mesmerising, especially those led by the violin. Bí Ann was a beautiful dedication to a friend that showed the depth of how they can involve themselves emotionally with their songs.
If you already have an interest in traditional music and rock styles they are definitely for you. Thought trad was a tad tedious? Kíla will ensure that thought remains a thing of the past. Although I have fallen in love with this Irish band’s music, I wouldn’t recommend it for everyone. Their distinctive style might not suit every taste but don’t rule them out before giving them a few chances. The diversity of their music means you might hate one song and absolutely adore the next. I give you my word that seeing them live is an opportunity not to be missed. If not for the music, for the sheer craic agus spraoi that comes with it!
