Disco Inferno

Review: Retro musical rocks the NUIG arts festival.

Article by : SpunOut.ie

Disco Inferno is a retro 70’s style musical. It features many of the memorable songs of the 70’s such as ‘Hot Stuff’, ‘Celebration’ and ‘Boogy Nights’. During Múscailt, the NUIG arts festival Galway University Musical Society put on a great show of this devilish 70’s musical!

The plot unfolds as Jack, a young, friendly guy working in a London nightclub (Disco Inferno) dreams of success, fame and glory. One night while he is cleaning the club he meets Lady Marmalade; a femme fatale. She lures him into her power and he trades his soul for her promises of success and stardom. Jack, played brilliantly by John Joyce, instantly overtakes the egotistical Heathcliffe (played by Colm McCarthy) in popularity and rises to fame.

With his newfound star studded life on stage Jack begins to neglect his friend Tom. Mark Mannion plays this idiotic, comical and lovable character brilliantly. Jack’s  long time sweetheart Jane is played by Aimee Brennan, a natural to the stage!

Despite his swarming fans declaring their adoration for him he slowly realises that this life isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. He realises that everything he ever wanted, he already had. It’s just one disaster after another as his newfound destiny has horrific consequences. If only he could turn back time, trade everything he has for the most important thing in his life; Jane.

Overall GUMS excelled at their production of Disco Inferno. It was very funny and the acting was fantastic!  This production combines a hilarious script, fantastic characters and an electrifying array of hits from an unforgettable era of glitter, flares and platform shoes.
