Coldplay: Viva la Vida
Review of the latest from Coldplay.
I like good music, therefore I liked this album overall, but I did notice a few things...
First of all, there's a hell of a lot more music on Viva la Vida than singing, if you get my drift. Most songs have long instrumentals between verses. In fact, track one, ‘Life in Technicolour’ has no singing at all, it’s just a slightly techno instrumental mixed with acoustic guitar! So you have to be prepared for that. Personally I thought there was just a little bit too much instrumental, got a bit boring.

I have to say, Coldplay are clearly trying new things in this album and they appear to come at each song with a different angle. For example, ‘Lovers in Japan’ has a slight Middle Eastern feel to it, and ‘42’ is a light piano-based easy listening piece that builds up gradually to an upbeat climax. The themes vary from subdued ‘Cemeteries of London’ to slightly brighter songs like ‘Strawberry Swing.’
Of course, everyone has heard of ‘Viva la Vida’ and ‘Violet Hill,’ two great songs. Along with ‘Lost’ these are probably the best songs on the album. So if these don't attract you, the album won’t either, trust me!
It sure makes a change from the usual monotone melodies and catchy choruses which were expected! It’s definitely not their best album yet but it’s great to see them experimenting with new sounds, something all bands have to do at some stage.
Overall, I enjoyed this album and would probably rate it 7 out of 10.
