On You and I

Poetry: The empty promise of love untold...

Article by : SpunOut.ie

Part One - Today

When I look into your eyes now
I see the shards of our last kiss,
The empty promise of love untold,
Unspoken:
We dare not breathe its name.

Every bubble is made to burst,
Every sight meant to fade
Into the nothing of dulling spark and smile,
Nothing:
We dare not shed our tears.

The past is gone, the future is all that’s left
For us to meander through,
Hand in hand and heart in heart
Together:
We dare not lose our grip.

Doubt reigns, but it feeds the shadow
And why should darkness win?
I keep the candle lit for us
Burning:
We dare not concede defeat.

One thirteenth day, one thirteenth night,
Of dulling spark and smile,
The last kiss holds in thought together,
Alone:
I dare not turn out the light.

Part Two - Tomorrow

I dreamt last night
That I was thee and you were me
And we were one and nothing
Could stop us then and now.
We joined hands together
Casting swimming shadows
In the centre of the sun
Untouched by the flames;
Rather fanning them and fuelling them
With the swirling strength of love.
I dreamt last night
But now it’s day.
So I am me and you are thee;
We are nothing and all
Has stopped with the true sun’s light
And the misleading flame of a daydream.
