Budget fashion tips for guys and girls who want to get sparkly on winter nights out.

Article by : SpunOut.ie

Tis almost the season to be merry.... or for poverty stricken students everywhere, tis the season for serious budgeting.  Even for those who are not on a strict budget, splurging on party type fashion or a new coat can seem unnecessary and even immoral (c’mon, SOMONE has to pay for your cheap bargain!)

So, what are you to do when all your mates are getting dressed up, splashing on new aftershave or perfume and looking at your old jeans disdainfully?

Well, never fear, there are options out there that won’t leave your bank account in the red.

  • Be honest with yourself about the state of your bank account. If you can’t afford to spend money on new clothes, then it's better to look at alternatives rather than get into debt.
  • Organise a clothes swapping session with mates/family/anyone whose fashion sense you admire. Get a crew of people together, all clutching their unwanted party rags, ask everyone to bring some food or drink, organise good tunes and not only will you have a whole new outfit, you’ll get a great night of craic into the bargain.
  • Take the time to see what’s actually in your wardrobe. It’s amazing what you can find buried under a pile of old jumpers.
  • Use your imagination. Maybe that funky summer shirt or skirt will dress up brilliantly when you add a pair of tights, smart shoes or a wooly cardigan.
  • Customise. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never picked up a needle and thread before. Drag out your ma’s sewing box and go wild with the accessories. Change buttons, add sparkle and use old clothing as material to funk up other stuff.
  • Suck up to family members. Believe it or not, your granny and granddad might have some pretty snazzy fashion items in their bottom drawers. Likewise, well paid brothers and sisters... do they REALLY need so many pairs of jeans? Persuade them to clear out their wardrobes and give the discarded items to you.
  • Hunt for second hand treasure. There are impressive bargains to be had in charity shops throughout the country, and at this time of year they have party fashion galore, not to mention mountains of scarves, coats and woolly hats.
