Is trendiness a good thing?

Have the courage to throw out the fashion mags and wear whatever makes you happy.

At the moment it sickens me to go clothes shopping! Every shop I go into has a huge section just for luminous coloured clothes. Seemingly it’s the latest trend. People seem to think it’s cool to look like they were attacked by highlighters.

I’ve never been a trend follower but I was never particularly against trends either. However, this new one has really changed my opinion about the whole idea of trends themselves. The sad thing is that if it was only one person wearing a luminous outfit they would stand out and it would be cool but with everyone going for this effect they look like a brightly coloured cult.

I can’t help but feel that people are a lot like sheep and it makes me wonder why that is. When there are so many people out there that talk about how important individuality is and when you see advice columns preaching about how everyone should just be themselves; why does it seem like everyone is compelled to dress exactly the same?

The only reason I can come up with is that a lot of people, teenagers in particular, are very insecure. Fear and insecurities force them to wear what people will automatically accept- because it’s in. This is such a shame as in all honesty something being ‘in’ doesn’t mean everyone will look good in it, nor that it will suit everyone’s different and unique personalities and it definitely won’t get anyone attention or help them to stand out.

It’s depressing to think that young people feel so insecure or bad about themselves that they can’t be their own person and it’s even worse that the fashion industry milks it. It takes courage and self confidence to dress for you and not just to fit in. However, I think that when you start taking that risk, your confidence swells. There is something boosting about knowing you are doing your own thing!

So, I’m going to suggest that everyone throws their fashion magazine with size zero models and trends out the window and that they go out and shop for their own style, shape and taste.

I say everyone should accept themselves just as they are and take pride and joy from doing their own thing! If it’s true that people are sheep - have the courage to be the black one and wear what makes you happy, because a trend always ends and in a year’s time you’ll look at the old clothes that are oh-so-fashionable now and think “OMG I can’t believe I wore that!”

Why not be ahead of the fashion scene and say it now?
