Hair agony
Slick for a moment, bird's nest disaster for the rest of the month.
I recently dragged myself to the hairdressers, dug deep into my pocket, paid €50 for a grumpy girl to chop my tresses into style and blow dry the life out of my hair, then went home happy with my glossy and funky new hairdo. For once, the hairdresser got it right and I wasn’t leaving with a mullet or in tears at their over-creativeness.
Until, that is, I reached the mirror in my bedroom. The shine and perfection was long gone after half an hour walking home on a particularly windy day. Instead of an ‘I’ve just been to the hairdressers’ reflection, I had the tangled mop of ‘I don’t give a damn about how I look’. Okay, so that last statement is more the usual me, but I had paid a big chunk of money to look good for at least a few days.
Now I understood the pain of Amy Winehouse and Britney Spears. Rather than pay a stylist to do the damage, why not chop off that tangled mess, bleach the life out of it or go the whole hog and shave your head? After spending so much time and money on hair styling, they must have reached breaking point, when they realised that despite all those long boring hours under a hairdryer, their hair was still ridiculed in magazines across the world.
Given that celebrities are under constant scrutiny by the world’s media, I can understand why they usually spend so much time and money on their looks and hair. However, what I can’t understand is the painfully expensive cost of a hair cut in towns and cities throughout Ireland. How are we supposed to afford a trim every 6 weeks when it costs €50 for the basic cut and blow dry and goes up to well over €100 if you fancy a bit of colour?
So if you can’t afford to visit the hairdressers or are sick of the short lived results, here are a few tips to help deal with scruffy hair:
- It’s winter, the perfect excuse to wear a trendy hat and cover any dodgy hair days. Choose wisely and you can keep your funky head gear on indoors. Of course, your father will be disgusted at your ‘hippy’ hat, but hey, who listens to parents on fashion!?
- Accessories: Head scarves, ribbons, Alice bands and many, many little elastics. If you’re a college student, this is the perfect way to spend long happy mornings when you should be in lectures. Get inventive with accessories and you can create a whole new look on the cheap.
- Talented friends: Now, you need to be brave for this one. Ask your mates, relations, neighbours and you’ll soon find someone who has experience and enjoys cutting hair. Ask them to trim yours and see how they do, if the result is good then you’ve found a new, free hairdresser.
- Up do’s: The final solution to dodgy hair. Grow it long, tie it up in a pony tail and forget about it!
