First date fashion
Tips for girls on how to prevent fashion disasters on that all important first date.
Ah, the allure of the first date. Whether it’s with a handsome stranger you recently acquainted yourself with or with a long held desire; there is no feeling like the ‘first date feeling’.
You feel unusually excited and those butterflies in your tummy are having a right party. Is he/she the one? Should you really go out with someone you met in a bar/nightclub/through friends/on a street corner? Ok, maybe the latter is just me. I used to be a right sucker...
So, you are getting high on adrenaline and anticipation – until you open your wardrobe. Oh dear. What in the hell are you going to wear? Garment after garment is tossed aside in your frantic search for the item of clothing that will transform your night and your life. Sadly, no such garment exists. I know. I know. Life is not fair. However the fashion industry makes a ton of money from selling this fable. So be warned.
Bearing all this in mind here are my top tips:
- The most important thing to remember when it comes to dressing for that all important first date is comfort. You are going to be nervous enough already. Do you really want to add your clothing to your list of worries? So, if you live in your ballet slippers and trainers a first date is not the ideal time to don a pair of stilettos.
- You shouldn’t feel the need to rush out to the nearest shop and buy the latest ‘in vogue’ item. Yes, it may be the latest style, however that does not mean you will like it or that it will work for you. Plus, what may be comfortable in the shop changing room may start to chafe, dig in, ride up or ride down when worn for longer than the two minutes you spent in it in the shop!
- When it comes to makeup less is always more. Again, go for what you are comfortable in though. So if you like to be fully done up always, then stick with that. If however your idea of full makeup is lip gloss and mascara then go with that. Once again the main thing is comfort. You want to feel confident and comfortable on your date.
- One important rule which seems at odds with the above is to be measured with the perfume. A large amount of scent can be very overpowering and sometimes sickening. I assume this is not the effect you want to have on your date!
- If possible, find out beforehand what you will be doing on the date. You will need to dress very differently if you are going to a super posh restaurant than you would if the plan was to go bowling. If you can’t find out beforehand what you are doing, try to choose something that would cover all bases. Nice black trousers with a fitted jacket and medium heels for example would work well in either of the above situations. A mini and killer heels on the other hand would not be quite so flexible.
- Maybe wear an old favourite. Most everyone has a magic item of clothing in their wardrobe that they feel really good in. Make use of it and wear it on your date.
- Finally, enjoy yourself!! This could be the start of something beautiful...
