Are we victims of fashion?

Pants or dresses, skirts or suits we all follow fashion.

How many people can say that they have their own opinions on clothes? The answer would be very few. You might think that you have your own opinion, but I think that only about one person out of 10 really does. If some of your friends were having a conversation about, for example, how luminous colours were so weird and out of fashion...would you go out and wear your luminous top the very next day? I doubt it!

If they were buying new runners, many teenagers would never go into Penneys to buy them...they want designer labels! We will pay anything for a pair of runners with a well-known logo. Most teenagers hate going into charity shops...and would NEVER buy clothes in there. Yet the proceeds from charity shops are for the third world and other good causes, so shouldn’t we be encouraged to shop there?

Many people want to copy their favourite celebrity’s style, no matter how expensive, or how revealing it is. But why should we even want to copy their styles? We should want to create our own. We live in a world where boys and girls are equal, right? Then how come many secondary school female students must wear skirts rather than trousers? Is that not sexism in its most basic form?

Many boys won’t wear pink for fear of what their friends would say about them. We usually forget that even though they pretend not to, boys care about what they wear too. Boys are just as self conscious as girls are. Even though they might be perfectly clean, most girls would never wear the same clothes for two days in a row, because they have been seen in them before and they are afraid people would notice. But, in reality, their friends probably wouldn’t notice, unless they are extremely observant.

I could continue with examples forever...but from all of this we can conclude that most teenagers, if not all, are victims of fashion!
