Top 10 homemade Christmas gifts

G'wan, give it a go!

At this time of year, money can be tight and difficult to get a hold of. Yet, it’s also the time when the demands for cash are high, and crimbo socialising and pressies can break the budget.

Never fear though, there are ways to make nice presses without breaking the bank (even the piggy one!)

Have a look through our list and see what inspires you:

  • Baked goods. An oldie, but a goldie. The basic ingredients of flour and sugar are cheap and available at any supermarket. Heck, you don’t even have to shell out on a cookbook. You can get tons of free recipes online. Then, get working on making delicious breads, pies, cakes or scones. Homemade ones always taste better than shop bought ones and are of course cheaper. People will also be touched that you went to the effort of making stuff for them.
  • Scarves, gloves, hats and sweaters. If you’re handy with a knitting needle or can sew, then you could always make some nice warm clothes and give them as pressies. Knitted stuff is a very practical gift, which many people will be thankful for. If you’d like to knit with others as a social thing, you could also check out a local knitting group.
  • Homemade beauty products, such as face masks or even soaps. You can find online guides on the topic of making your own cosmetics. You can also get books on homemade cosmetics at your local library. The great news is that the ingredients are usually dead cheap and the recipes can be easy to make.
  • A gift basket. Pick yourself up a cheap basket in the shop and fill it with things such as nice soaps etc.
  • A coupon book. Fill a book with coupons for the receiver. The twist is that the coupons are things that you will do. So for example “This coupon entitles the holder to one 30 minute massage” or “This coupon entitles the holder to a three course meal cooked by [insert your name]”. Get creative and you could make the book really, really helpful.
  • Scrap books or filled photo albums. In this digital age, many people have hard drives and Facebook accounts filled with lovely photos, but yet no actual physical albums. You could print out a variety of lovely photos and put them in a scrapbook or album. This type of gift is bound to raise a smile.
  • Cooking up a storm. Make a fancy three course meal and really turn it into a night of luxury and relaxation for the receiver.
  • Candles. You can make your very own. You will prob need to shell out for a kit, but otherwise they are cheap to make.
  • Jewellery. You can make your own jewellery at home.  There are online guides on this subject and you may also find some books on it at your local library. The jewellery can be as pretty or as unique as you like.
  • Writings. Some people have started blogs to memorialise a special person in their life. Others write stories featuring their loved ones as the main characters. Still others write poems or songs for their love ones. If you are creative, it’s worth a try.

Get creative and give one of these ideas a go. You are bound to come up with something fantastic!
