Summer holiday plans

Young people's tips on how best to spend those long summer hols!

Article by : SpunOut.ie

It’s coming close to that wonderful time of year when we hope for three months of glorious freedom, sun (or heavy rain), sea, sand and many visits to the auld ice cream van! Yes, it’s the summer holidays. No matter whether you are working, at school or at college, it’s hard to beat the buzz of the start of summer. For the majority of us it means a well-earned break from school or work, so it is important to plan the holidays well:

For those who are going abroad:

  • Firstly, try not to be too ecstatic about leaving Ireland’s rain behind - your enthusiasm may make those of us who are staying at home accidentally lose your passport! Then, remember there is TV programme called Holidays from Hell so research your location well, ask friends and family about their past holidays and see whether they would recommend your chosen hot spot.
  • Pack well in advance and ensure your passport is up to date. Check out the SpunOut.ie Travel section for lots of packing tips.
  • Remember the essentials: The Irish Cancer Society recommends choosing a sunscreen of  SPF 15 or more and with UVA protection, that is high or ultra high (4-5 stars). See here for sun safety tips. Also bring insect repellent and make sure to get any injections you might need. And of course, pack your camera and rubber dingy!
  • Make sure you know the baggage weight allowance; the airline website will have all the info you need. If you are returning with a different airline, make sure that you check the weight allowance again as it could be less!
  • Stay safe and enjoy the holiday!

For those of us staying in Costa de Ireland:

  • Check your local library or city/county council website for information about up-coming events and festivals, many of which are free.
  • Buy a rail or bus ticket and get out there! Hit the beach or the park. Ireland is a beautiful country and has a lot to offer, and if you meet an American who knows more about your local area than you do, say you don’t speak English and hit the tourist office for information.
  • Take up a hobby. You have lots of free time so why not try your hand at that dance class you always fancied?
  • Spring clean! Yes, I am serious. It can do you the world of good to have a clear out and get rid of old clothes and junk that’s just taking up space at home. If you’re returning to college or school in September, it will be especially helpful to have a clear space to work in and you won’t have time to organize that in September.
  • Volunteer - (No I have not lost it!) Help out every now and then with your local charity or maybe ask an elderly neighbour if they have any jobs they would like done. You will feel much better about yourself afterwards! Find out more about volunteering here.
