Summer cents
Opinion: Surviving the summer on a budget.

Not sure how to have fun when your wallet’s empty and there’s no summer job in sight? Check out these tips to see you through the skint months.
- If you plan to go to the cinema, check to see if the film is showing during the afternoon, as seeing it then can save you a couple of euros. Also bring your own munchies, so you can pocket that little bit of extra cash.
- Or skip the cinema and have a movie marathon at home. Invite all your friends and get them all to bring a new release. This way you get to see the latest films at a fraction of the cost!
- Save on phone credit by texting online. If you don’t have access to the Internet at home, try to go online in a library rather than in Internet cafés as it is usually cheaper.
- Check out whether there are free gigs in your local area. Some nightclubs and bars allow free admission before 10pm, so take advantage of it!
- On a night out with friends, arrange to put money into a kitty for drinks. Take it from me: the drinks will flow all night at a fraction of the cost. Or better still and healthier, skip the alcohol or alternate your drinks with water. Not only will it save you money, but also it will help keep that hangover under control the next morning.
- Instead of taking a taxi, leave a little earlier and walk to your destination (within reason and minding your safety of course – don’t walk home alone at night and always tell someone where you’re going) or take the bus.
- Make your lunch the night before instead of spending a fortune on overpriced sandwiches.
- If you live in the countryside or have access to somewhere to exercise for free, use this instead of paying for a gym.
- Invite your friends around for a meal or a barbecue instead of paying a fortune going out to eat. Ask everyone to bring along part of the meal. Return the favour by doing the same for them!
