How to get creative

But I'm not creative!

Article by : SpunOut.ie

“But I’m not creative” is a refrain well heard around schools/halls/colleges/houses. Yes, you may not be an author, a songwriter, a baker or a candlestick maker, but you CAN be creative. If your paintings look like they have been drawn by a one year old; if your bread burns; if your voice sounds like a choking crow; there is still room to create.

Here are SpunOut’s top tips to unleash the creative beast in you:

  • Arguments go back and forth about whether everyone is creative. Some people, like Sir Ken Robinson argue that everyone is creative; but that it is bashed out of many people by the time they get to adulthood. So, think back to when you were a child. What did you like doing then? Perhaps now would be a good time to start with the fun activity you loved then.
  • Even if you can’t remember what you loved as a child, give a thought to something now. You have nothing to lose by looking inside yourself and going for it. All humans have thoughts and opinions. Put simply, we are not robots, so there is a way for all of us to get our thoughts out. This could be in the form of writing, sewing, painting, singing, anything.
  • With the advent of the Internet age and the blogosphere, there are ways for you to share your stories, photographs and pictures. If you feel self conscious about your work, you can be anonymous. You can use a funky user name for your blogs and photos and cover yourself when singing your songs.
  • Many people find a routine will unleash their creative juices. Marian Keyes writes in her bed and feels most creative there; while others artists/writers/songwriters feel nature inspires them. Find out what works for YOU and give it a go.
  • Pay attention to whether you are an introvert or extrovert. Contrary to popular belief, being an extrovert has nothing to do with being loud, while being an introvert is not about being quiet. It all has to do with where you get your energy from.  Introverts need time alone and feel energised and inspired by this, while extroverts are the opposite. So, introverts might start being creative by reading books and starting to experiment at home, whereas an extravert might prefer to attend a formal class on their creative activity of choice.
  • Don’t pay too much attention to others. Not only will others' ideas hamper your creativity; it may make you feel like you are doing it wrong, since your way of creating will be different to someone else’s version of how things should be done. This is why there are not many long lasting creative partnerships!
  • Be original and don’t just go with the flow of what everyone else is doing. All trends begin with someone thinking outside the box; so let those crazy ideas reign free!
