How to be the perfect party guest

Be kind to the house and the hosts at house parties!

Article by : SpunOut.ie

House parties can be great craic for all involved, as long as things don’t get out of hand. If you are heading to your first house party, make sure it's not your last with these handy tips.

Whether you know the person or not, the location of the party, how old you and the party host are... all of these things can affect how you should behave at a house party.

If you know the house party host:

  • If it's one of your closer friends, you've probably been helping them plan it for a while. Just make sure you've thought of the clean up. Nobody wants to be left cleaning up someone else's vomit at any time, but while hung-over is certainly not the way to be facing the house!!
  • If you're staying to clean up, bring rubber gloves and make sure your friend has the materials for a good fry-up. Elect one person chef and let them get on with it while the rest of you pick up the empties etc.
  • Ask what you can bring, and make sure that your friend has told everyone else what to bring too. They are bearing the risk of having a load of drunken guests; they shouldn't have to bear the cost of the booze and food too. The guests have a free venue that won't check ID for the night - they won't mind bringing some food.
  • At the very least make sure everyone knows it's BYOB (bring your own booze), preferably BYOBASFM (bring your own booze and some for me)!!

If they are a stranger to you:

  • If you're going to a random person's gaff, that's grand but make sure you toe the line.
  • Bring your own booze.
  • Don't be an embarrassment. It's not your house and it's not your friend's house. Throwing up, getting too drunk or breaking anything are all out of order.
  • If the host asks you to do or not to so something, obey them.
  • Don't be the last to leave. If you're staying overnight, help with the clean up the next morning.

In all cases:

  • Bring your own booze.
  • Don't throw up. (If you do, clean it up yourself, drink plenty of water, have something to eat and go to sleep asap).
  • Obey the host. And text the host to say thank you the next day!
  • Don't get too locked, it's pure nasty!
  • Above all, stay with at least one friend through the night so that you're safe.
