Give the right side of your brain some love
Opinion: Getting your creative groove on soothes the soul.
The brain, like many parts of the body is made up of two halves, called the left and the right hemispheres. It is widely accepted that each side of the brain is responsible for different modes of thinking, such as:
Left brain thinking:
- Logical
- Sequential
- Rational
- Analytical
- Objective
- Looks at parts
Right brain thinking:
- Random
- Intuitive
- Holistic
- Synthesising
- Subjective
- Looks at wholes
In our modern and western educated minds, there tends to be a heavy emphasis on left brain thinking. In fact, it’s surprising that we’re not all walking around with our heads tilted permanently to the left!
Using our right brain thinking skills for a change by tapping into more creative pursuits, can provide us with many benefits that help us feel more well-balanced and complete.
If you give your right brain some love you will learn to:
- Appreciate the process more than the result - shush your perfectionist tendencies and just enjoy trying something new like learning to play an instrument, messing around with pottery, or singing a song that leaves the shower singing Gods in awe.
- Tap into your playful nature - sure we’re all just overgrown kids anyway! Embrace your child-like curiosity, quit over-thinking, and just get in there and try it out!
- Use your hands - oh the tactile thrills of doing more with them then tapping buttons!
- Take your time - many creative ideas can’t be forced, so let one idea lead to another, flesh it out, let it unravel, no force, all flow.
- Dream on - many of us have a secret desire to be an amazing artist or artisan of some sort. Come on, we’d all love to be a worshipped rock star! Break through your fear of not being good enough or of making an a** of yourself and just go for it!
- Change your perspective - getting off the screen can open up a whole new multi-dimensional world.
- Find a therapeutic outlet - pumping energy into your right brain can ease your hardworking mind and relieve even the most overwhelming stress.
- Step out of your comfort zone - creature of habit anyone? Trying something new can provide you with a great confidence boost. You are likely to surprise yourself with your hidden talents and newfound passions.
- Impress the lad/ladies - sure everyone wants to shag an artist, right?!
Remember we all have a right side of the brain, so no ‘I’m not a creative type at all’ excuses allowed! Everything from getting dressed to walking down the street requires a bit of creativity and rhythm, so don’t underestimate your potential to get the creative vibrations humming!
