Young mum
Opinion: Young mothers deserve to go out and let their hair down!
Mothers in Dublin come in all ages, some as young as 15, some as mature as 45, but they all have one thing in common; they are mothers. In particular, the number of Dublin mothers in the 18-28 age group is on the increase. The recession has kicked in and young couples are no longer going out to nightclubs on a Saturday night, but sitting in, drinking cheap wine, ordering cheap take away and getting to bed early!
The problem is, now that these young mothers have a new life to look after, and old life (going out partying) to forget, how do they find a balance between partying and childcare without being labelled as bad mums, a label any mother would be appalled to hear?
I myself am a young mum and have a four month old daughter. I adore every second that I spend with her, BUT I do have a desire to slip back into my old life for a few hours on a Saturday night. Of course, that leaves me feeling rough and fragile the next day- and a screaming baby is definitely not the cure I am looking for then!
Young mothers deserve to go out and let their hair down, but society judges them for it and portrays them as bad mums.
I wonder what we can do to help this large community of mothers (including myself), to make them feel like good mums who want, and are allowed, to have fun! I want to feel like I can go out without being judged! I know I am a good mum even if I do like to socialise once a week.
Why should I be judged for that?
