Rates of pay
Find out about the minimum wage.
Payment of wages:
All employees are entitled by law to a payslip. This allows you to check over your total pay before tax and all details of any deductions made from your pay.
Rates of pay:
- The minimum wage rate for an experienced adult employee is currently €8.65 from 1 July 2011. An experienced adult employee is defined as being over 18 and working for two years or more. The reduced 2011 rate will not apply to current employees; only employees employed after the introduction of the reduced wage.
- The minimum wage, however, doesn’t apply to young people under 18 or people in training. If you are under 18 then the minimum wage is €6.06 per hour.
- From age 18 onwards you should be paid €6.92 per hour in your first year of employment and €7.79 per hour in your second year of employment.
The National Minimum Wage law does not apply:
- To anyone under 18.
- Anyone employed by a close relative.
- To those serving apprenticeships (training).
When will I qualify for the national minimum rate?
You are automatically entitled to the minimum rate per hour once you have been working for two years at any time over the age of 18.
What can be included to make up my pay?
- Your basic pay
- Commissions and bonuses which are related to productivity
- Board and lodgings (if you receive them)
What can't be included?
In restaurant and bar jobs, tips cannot be used by employers to calculate the hourly wage level. Other payments that cannot be included are:
