Tips to get you started as a volunteer!
Article by : SpunOut.ie
Volunteering is when you work for free to help an organisation, charity, voluntary body or cause. Depending on how much free time you have, volunteering might mean giving a few hours a week or it can mean a full time volunteering job.
It covers a huge range of jobs. Here’s some to give you an idea:
- Working in a charity shop at weekends.
- Helping at an animal reserve.
- Doing a litter clean up in your area.
- Visiting an old people’s home or helping an older neighbour or relative (by walking their dog, doing their shopping or just offering company for a while).
- Coaching the local badminton team.
- Raising money for charities.
- Work for a conservation organisation (planting trees, campaigning for nature reserves and so on).
- Volunteering with an organisation that supports people with disabilities.
- Training with a helpline like the Samaritans or Childline.
- Volunteering in other countries. This usually means committing to work for at least a few months.
- If you already have a job you can normally get voluntary work that uses your skills. For example nurses, doctors, teachers and engineering staff are in big demand as volunteers in other countries.
