All you need to know about becoming a Solicitor!

Qualifications/ Experience needed:

A law degree is not technically necessary but you must pass the Law Society Exams entrance exams to be eligible for an apprenticeship. Your apprenticeship will take approx 3 years during which time you will have to take further Law Society Exams.

Your Typical Day:

I spend most of the hours between 9 and 5 either on the phone or meeting with clients. I deal with people all day be it clients, other solicitors, barristers, bank staff, court staff or our own office staff. Most of my work gets done after office hours when the phone is switched off.

What do you love about your job?

No 2 files are ever the same.

What do you hate about your job?

It is very demanding and the hours are very long.

How does a young person get started in a career like yours?

The Law Society Entrance exams are the first hurdle. There are currently 8 but this is expected to increase to 10 soon. Once they are completed successfully you will need to secure an office in which to do your training. You also need to pass the first Law Society Irish Exam. After that your apprenticeship will begin. Patience, an eye for detail and good customer service skills.
