Pool lifeguard
Insight into a lifeguard's day!
Qualifications/ Experience needed: Pool lifeguard qualification. This course/exam costs around €250 to do and can be done over 2 weekends.
My typical day: I get into work at 9am or 3pm depending on the shift I'm working. Turn on the sauna and steam room, check the temperature, chlorine level, ph of the pool and jacuzzi and adjust if necessary, turn on gym machines and open up. Watch pool, clean, serve clients at reception desk, answer phone and do the till. Nothing like Baywatch at all!!!!
What I love about my job: Em not a lot...I get free use of the pool and gym! Feel good factor when I rescue someone.
What I hate: Kids that won't stop jumping into the pool and cleaning.
How does a young person get started as a lifeguard? Apply for a lifeguard course. If you ring up your local council offices or your local jobs club you should be able to get the necessary contact number.
Qualities you need: Strong swimmer, attentive personality.
Advice for wannabes: If you want to become a lifeguard, it's not that difficult. Do the course and apply for jobs in local leisure centres. Being a lifeguard is not half as exciting or fulfilling, as it seems, however, it is definitely a good qualification to have and it looks good on your C.V.
