Qualifications/ Experience needed:

None

Your Typical Day:

Supposed to be at sea all day but for now I watch TV due to bad weather and mechanical problems.

What do you love about your job?

No boss, no deadlines, no pressure, fresh air, scenery, exercise, self employed, flexible working hours. easy, no stress (as long as the boat is working at least). Lots of time off.

What do you hate about your job?

If there is bad weather or mechanical problems like the last few months my earnings are zero. Not very intellectually stimulating and repetitive.

How does a young person get started in a career like yours?

Ask a fisherman for a job or if you are rich, buy a boat.

Qualities you need for this job?

You need to enjoy being outdoors, not mind being cold and wet, self-discipline to get up early and go out in the cold and wet.

Advice for wannabes:

You have to like boats and being out at sea and not mind being out in shitty weather. The money can be very good at times and other times you make very little so you need prepare for the lean times. It will only really pay well if you own the boat and make some other eejit earn the money for you. If you are self employed the money you earn depends on how hard you work. But you can do as little or as much as you like.

If you are working as a crewman, you could make more money doing other things but if you like being at sea then the money is still quite good compared to a lot of other jobs and the work is not too demanding and pretty stress free. Unless you own the thing and need to pay for all the bills and repairs and do the paper work. You get lots of fresh air. The days can be long and conditions can be harsh but you get used to it.
