Garda vetting
What it is and how to get it.
There are certain type of jobs that require ’Garda clearance’. Garda clearance refers to the Gardaí checking out a person’s history and whether or not they have a criminal record. In particular, the Gardaí check for any sex offences or offences related to children.
Many jobs require Garda clearance, particularly jobs working with young, vulnerable or ill people.
Under Section 26 of the Sex Offenders Act 2001, if you have been convicted of a sex crime you cannot work with children or mentally ill people without letting your employer know that you have been convicted of a sex crime.
You will need to fill in a Gardaí clearance form, listing all previous address you have lived in, as well as all criminal convictions you have if you:
- Are a potential employee of the HSE.
- Are about to start work as a teacher.
- Work in the youth work field or in certain sporting organisations.
- Work in the childcare sector.
- Work with elderly or mentally ill people.
- Work as a bouncer or in a security firm.
