Cover letters

Get employers' attention with a great cover letter.

Article by : SpunOut.ie

A cover letter (or email) explains why you want the job and what makes you the right person for it.

It should spark the potential employer's attention so that they're keen to read your CV. You should always send a cover letter with your CV or application form.

  • Start the letter by explaining what job you're applying for and where/when you saw it advertised. Then, mention how your skills and interests make you the right person for the job and say why you want to work for them. End the letter with a positive statement like “I look forward to hearing from you”.
  • Like your CV, the cover letter needs to be printed (black ink and white A4 paper) and well presented.
  • Use a clear, easy to read letter font such as Arial or Times New Roman.
  • Keep your cover letter short and to the point, about three or four paragraphs will do the job.
  • Make sure the letter is formal: start with your address and the employer's address at the top, address the letter to your contact person or to Madam/Sir and end with "Yours Sincerely" and your signature.
  • Make sure the letter is specific to the particular job you are applying to.
  • Read over the finished cover letter a few times and make sure there are no spelling mistakes.
