Complimentary medicine worked for me
True life: I chose yoga, kinesiology and homeopathy as my medicine.
It seems the whole debate about 'alternative' versus 'normal' medicine hasn't gone away. Alternative medicine should really be referred to as complementary medicine. I don`t see any reason why the medicine that is practiced in our doctors’ surgeries and hospitals can’t sit side by side with complementary medicine. They often overlap and there is certainly room for both.
Complementary medicine holds its science in the plant or herb. The chemicals found in plants are often overlooked for their medicinal properties. This is where medicine began and this is how are ancestors lived. I agree that there is a much needed place for our doctors and hospitals and their amazing work is never credited enough but I feel that pills and tablets can be sometime too easily turned too.
I was very ill for most of 2009 with exhaustion, panic disorder and agoraphobia along with the many horrible effects that stress and disrupted sleep brings. I chose yoga, kinesiology and homeopathy as my medicine. Oh, and not to mention, the new wonder-drug - asking someone to listen and hold my hand. I had visited one doctor in my home county of Cavan who told me I was just depressed and that she’d give me some Valium and Xanex to take as I pleased. Well, I probably was depressed as everyone gets on a day to day basis, especially when they are sick. But, I felt that this wasnt going to cure what my body was trying to tell me. It would simply put a brick on my emotions until the next eruption, and would work for a short while as a temporary solution maybe while I became addicted to the tablets. So I sat and listened to my body and struggled for a year. It was the harder, longer route but much more rewarding and now I’m 100%.
Often dis-ease is an emotional blockage and sometimes in this fast-paced world it is hard to find someone to hold your hand and listen and it’s much easier to reach for the painkillers.
Complementary medicine is not new; it is older than any of us. Over 80% of the world's population relies on some form of natural medicine or healing, much more than use modern medicine, which is relatively a newcomer. Human beings and plants have lived in harmony for millions of years before science turned its attention to nature’s laboratory. The achievements of science are great, in particular, medicinal science, in making use of herbs and plants for the benefit of health. Doctor and herbalist or therapist or healer are not in oppostion. Each want to rectify health problems. The relationship we have with plant and herb embraces a lore extending back to prehistory and an instinct that is as old as the human race itself.
