How to deal with an illness

True Life: Talking you through what I've overcome.

Article by : idork

At the age of eleven, I got sick. I ended up in hospital and had to take medication three times a day. I went from being a healthy eleven year old, to a very sick, death conscious, scared young girl. Nobody could relate to me, no-one could say “I know how you feel”, because no-one did know how I felt.

It was a very difficult illness to have, I had to tell a parent when my symptoms got bad and I had to go to hospital then. I am a very private person and I did not like this. The medication I was on prevented me from living a normal life and following a normal day-to-day routine. I couldn’t run up the stairs, I couldn’t go out to play, I had no life basically.

Because of all these restrictions, I became depressed. I turned to food and my bedroom for comfort. I slept all day and stayed up worrying all night. After some time, I released that it was my imagination running away with itself that was creating this fear in me. I automatically always had negative thoughts. These thoughts were the big thing that was holding me back.

So, since then I’ve realised it’s not how sick you are, it’s how healthy you are getting. A positivite attitude and my friends got me through my rough patch. I know I wasn’t the sickest person in the world, but, in my world I was. Because, hey, no-one else is me.

And now I strive to be the best I can be.
