Working Holidays

Check out info on the Working Holiday scheme.

The Working Holiday Scheme is an arrangement made between two countries or governments that allows citizens of each country to work and live for a summer in either country. The criteria for the schemes vary from country to country, but generally the schemes are aimed at young people under the age of 30 who want to travel and earn some cash for the summer.

In order to qualify for the schemes, participants may need to meet certain health and character requirements i.e. appropriate vaccinations and a good character record. Many countries deny visa to those who have spent any time in prison or whom have any type of criminal record. Applicants may also need to purchase health insurance before they can enter certain countries. Most countires require that applicants have a certain amount of money in their bank account and that they hold a return ticket home before entering the country.

Ireland has Working Holiday agreements with:

  • U.S.A.
  • Argentina
  • Australia
  • Canada
  • Hong Kong
  • Japan
  • New Zealand
  • Republic of Korea

Non-Irish citizens who are living in Ireland can contact their Embassy or Consulate to enquire if there is a Working Holiday scheme in operation in their country. If you don’t live in Ireland and wish to avail of an Irish Working Holiday, you should also contact your Embassy or Consulate.
