Travel checklist

Make sure you're ready to head off on travel adventures!

Article by : SpunOut.ie

This is not a definitive list but it is worth noting the points below:

  • Check that your passport is still valid and find out if you need a visa for any of the countries you intend to visit.
  • Read up on the countries you plan to visit: there are loads of different guidebooks you can buy or borrow from your local library.
  • Talk to a doctor or nurse about whether you need any vaccines (jabs) for the countries you'll be in. Make sure to check this at least six weeks before travelling. Ask about the price also. This is important as some are very expensive and you might need to rethink your travel budget!
  • If you take any medication (the pill, asthma, diabetic meds) make sure you have enough for the whole trip and a copy of the prescription. (If the prescription is unreadable, get a typed letter from your doctor).
  • If travelling in Europe, make sure to get a European health insurance card, which entitles you to emergency health care in any EU member state. Check out this website for more information.
  • Get travel insurance: choose one that covers you for illness, injury, accident and theft of money, luggage and documents.
  • Make sure to have your finances sorted. See holiday money section.
  • Make photocopies of your passport, tickets and insurance: keep one set of copies in your luggage separate from the originals and leave another in a safe place at home. If you’re robbed at least you’ll have those.
  • Ask someone at home (that you trust) to mind a copy of your credit card details: again this is useful if you’re unlucky enough to have it stolen.
  • Buy condoms, a first aid kit, sunglasses and sun cream- health essentials!
