Cultural sensitivity
Learn more about respecting local culture when travelling.

No matter where you are travelling or how long you stay in another country, it’s both smart and respectful to learn something about the customs and norms of the places you plan to visit.
Cultural sensitivity means taking your cues from the locals and respecting their cultures, customs and ways.
- Learn about the country you plan to visit – search for information online or in guidebooks before you travel and talk to locals when you arrive.
- In some countries it is important to dress appropriately. Depending on where you visit, it might be inappropriate to wear very fitted, tight or skimpy clothing. Take note of what the locals are wearing.
- Always ask about appropriate clothing before you visit religious temples or shrines, as shorts or beach clothing is often not suitable. Sometimes you might also have to cover your head.
- Other countries have different attitudes and customs when it comes to time, personal space and social norms, so take note that these might be very different to yours.
- In general remember that you are a visitor to their country so respect that.
