Converting religions
Seeking out spirituality that works for you.
What is religious conversion?
Religious conversion is the act of changing religion. You may have had the same religion since you were born and you may feel it is not right for you. Or, you many have changed religion once and wish to do it again. It is a big decision, but many people feel that it is the right one for them.
Reasons for converting:
- Unhappiness with your current faith – You may feel that your current religion is not in line with your beliefs.
- Marriage – You may need to convert in order to be able to marry someone of a different faith. Make sure this choice is a free one and that you are not being pressured by your partner.
- Actions of your current church – You may feel unhappy at actions your church/religion has taken and that you cannot support it any longer.
Things to think about before you convert:
- Make sure you are not being pressured into changing religions and that it a free choice. This can be an issue if you are in a serious relationship with someone who is of a different religion.
- Study it up. Read books about the religion, study the religion text affiliated with it (The Bible, The Koran, The Torah etc.) and speak to those who minister in the church. If possible, speak to others who have converted.
- Try to be as open minded as possible. Even after you have done all your research, you may find that you would rather repair your relationship with your old faith than convert to a new one.
- Pray or meditate and ask for guidance.
- Perhaps seek non denominational (non religious) counselling from a professional therapist.
- If you do decide to convert, be prepared for negative reactions from friends and family. Some people may be very supportive, but others may not agree with what you are doing. Some may feel that what you are doing is wrong.
